Red Rock BBQ – Ypsilanti

Barbecue has taken the U.S. by storm and quickly become the new food fad. The metro Detroit area has tons of great BBQ places, but I think my favorite is Red Rock BBQ in downtown Ypsilanti. Yes, I’ve been to Slow’s and Red Smoke and a plethora of other BBQ places, but Red Rock is by far my favorite.

First of all, Red Rock lives in one of my former favorite bars of years ago – the Tap Room. It didn’t really hit me until the friend I was with mentioned it. Tons of great memories came back and everywhere I looked I remember subtle elements of the old, smokey TC’s Speakeasy. Red Rock vastly improved the surroundings though. A centrally located bar splits up the two main dinning areas, and beautiful brick arch ways and repurposed wood cover the remaining walls.

While the atmosphere at Red Rock is nice, that’s not really what you’ll come back for. The food was phenomenal. I think with a pop I paid about $15 for my dinner of pulled pork, waffle, fries and macaroni ‘n’ cheese. There was probably enough food for two people! The pulled pork was nice and tender with a slight smokey flavor and the mac ‘n’ cheese was the cheesiest and creamiest I’ve had. They  have pimento mac ‘n’ cheese, which my boyfriend ordered, that I would’ve ate all on its own.

Red Rock offers four different types of sauces to dip your perfectly cooked meat in. The first is a mustard style sauce, which I honestly wasn’t a huge fan of. I don’t like mustard in general, but it was decent. The second sauce is southern inspired and has a heavy vinegar bitterness. I really enjoyed this sauce and it complemented the sweetness of the pork nicely. They also offer a spicier sauce and a smokey, sweet and spicy house blend BBQ sauce; both of which I really loved. In fact, I filled the remaining space in my carry out container with the house blend sauce.

If you’re a Michigan beer fan, Red Rock has plenty on tap for you to try. Check their website for more details on Beer Enthusiast Monday. Not a beer fan? How about Wine-Down Wednesdays?

If you haven’t been to Red Rock by now, you’re really missing out. Make sure to put it on your must-visit restaurant list.
